Full disclosure, my daily smartphone is an iPhone XR. I've been loyal to iPhone for some years now.

But recently I had the opportunity to test drive a Samsung S10 and was blown away by its elegance and performance. What most impressed me was the screen. If you see the side by side photo above, the S10 does not have an unsightly notch like the iPhone. As I played content like Netflix and videos, the resolution was noticeably different and better on the S10. In addition, as I began to look at the specs I came to the realization that the S10 is, top to bottom, a better phone in the following ways:

  • Better battery life

  • Better screen resolution

  • Lighter in weight

  • Significantly more storage size

  • Better camera

  • Cheaper, if only by $99

So why would I stick with my iPhone? Well, I'm actually asking that question to myself now that I've done the comparison. Ultimately, I'm heavily invested in the iOS and Apple ecosystem. By that I mean:

  • My daily computer is a Macbook, so the interoperability is excellent.

  • I have an Apple watch, that I absolutely love. It is a huge part of my life, particularly my fitness routine. The Apple Watch is the best fitness watch.

  • iMessage - My wife and kids are iMessage users and we love it. I very much value receiving read receipts from my kids.

  • Find Friends - Being able to use the iOS specific app to locate my family members at any time, is invaluable. Especially with my kids.

  • Superb hardware - I've been known to use a single iPhone for 3+ years with heavy usage, ultimately they take a licking and keep on ticking.

The summary is that the Samsung S10 is a better phone and provides more bang for your buck. But you must also weigh any other factors, such as how invested you are in the Apple ecosystem, such as iPads, et cetera.

I'm going to stay with iPhone, but kudos to Samsung for forcing Apple to continue to innovate.
